Built for Jellyfish

The most widely used conservation device in shrimp fishing was invented to solve a jellyfish problem.

Northern Norway, late 1980s: a rigid grid angled inside the trawl. Shrimp pass through the bars. Anything bigger gets deflected out through an escape hole. It turned out to remove almost all the fish bycatch too — while losing just 0–2% of the shrimp. Mandatory in Norway by 1991. Worldwide by 1993.

Sometimes the better answer is just better.
